Spain and Morocco Boost Port Cooperation to Ease Travel for Moroccan Expatriates

On the sidelines of the official visit of King Felipe VI of Spain and his wife to Morocco, several cooperation agreements were signed between the two countries, including one that should affect Moroccans residing abroad when they cross between the ports of Algeciras, in southern Spain, and Tanger-Med.
This agreement provides for the implementation of a system to facilitate commercial and passenger flows across the Strait of Gibraltar. This should therefore concern goods but also passengers. Last year, flows at Tanger-Med reached 2.8 million passengers, mostly MREs, and 326,000 trucks dedicated to international transport.
The agreement between the two ports aims to increase the number of trucks to 600,000 by 2025, while the number of passengers is not expected to see any major change, according to the TangerMed port authority, which specifies that the increase in TIR truck flows is due to the dynamics of industrial and agricultural exports.
Among the procedures that will be implemented, a data sharing between the two ports as well as a facilitation of trade, we are also told. It is also planned to implement a "competitive port, maritime and logistics offer, adapted to the needs of passengers and goods".
