Soaring Tourism Costs Force Moroccans to Vacation Abroad

In Morocco, the exaggerated increase in the prices of tourist services (hotels, cafes and restaurants) during the summer season significantly affects domestic tourism and the local economy.

Many Moroccans continue to denounce on social networks the surge in prices of these tourist services that prevents them from enjoying their summer vacations within the kingdom. They are questioning the reasons for this price increase and are calling on the competent authorities to implement measures to regulate prices and protect consumer rights.

The price increase has led many Moroccans to opt for vacations outside of Morocco, particularly in southern Spain where tourist service prices are lower than in Morocco. This rush of Moroccans abroad affects domestic tourism, explains economic analyst Omar Kettani to Al3omk, specifying that Moroccans who have chosen to spend their vacations within the kingdom have reduced the duration of their stay.

This inflation is explained by the fact that the players in the sector are seeking to compensate for the losses suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic, by increasing prices by 60 to 70%, develops Kettani, adding that the cost of a night in a five-star hotel can reach 2,000 dirhams. The expert notes that this price increase also benefits the State thanks to the increase in value added tax (VAT).

Bouazza Kharrati, president of the Moroccan Union for Consumer Rights, had previously explained that the price increase responds to the law of supply and demand, recalling that restaurants and cafes are required to display the prices of their menus, in accordance with the law, in order to protect the rights of consumers and ensure transparency in the market.
