Soaring Sheep Prices Lead to Reduced Eid al-Adha Sacrifices in Morocco
The volume of waste produced by Moroccans during the Eid al-Adha period has decreased considerably this year compared to last year. The rise in sheep prices for the sacrifice is one of the reasons for this decline.
Many Moroccan families had to give up buying sheep for the sacrifice this year, as prices have reached an unprecedented high. Instead of the sheep, Moroccans opted for buying mutton by the kilo, which explains the significant drop in waste observed the day after Eid al-Adha.
This year, 50% of the inhabitants of the city of Salé did not sacrifice sheep, said Abdelatif Soudou, former deputy mayor of Salé, in a post on his Facebook account, confirming the significant drop in the volume of waste on the occasion of Eid al-Adha 2024.
The former PJD elected official indicated that 1,134 tons of waste were collected this year compared to about 1,800 tons in 2023 in the Tabriquet Laayada district, 758 tons compared to 2,378 tons in the Bettana Hssain district, and 517 tons compared to 1,016 tons in the Lamrissa district.
In a Facebook post, Hassan Belkhaidar, a municipal councilor, added that 1,238 tons of waste compared to 1,610 tons last year were collected in the Souani and city districts, and 2,183 tons compared to 2,882 tons in the Mghogha and Bni Makada districts. In Casablanca, 12,000 tons of waste were collected on the day of Eid al-Adha.
