Soaring Costs Can’t Deter Moroccan Expats’ Summer Homecoming Rush
The return to Morocco during the summer becomes a headache for many Moroccans in Europe who have to face a rise in the prices of tourist services.
In addition to the high cost of plane tickets, MREs are facing a rise in tourist services. The prices charged in hotels, restaurants and cafes in tourist cities do not fit within their vacation budgets.
MREs suffer more from this situation compared to foreign tourists, say professionals who estimate that vacations cost twice as much for MREs as for foreign tourists. But this surge in prices does not dampen the desire of MREs to head to Morocco for their summer vacations. This season, 1.5 million MREs have already joined the kingdom, an increase of 13.3% compared to 2024.
Of the 17.4 million tourists who visited Morocco in 2024, nearly half (8.6 million) were MREs, according to the latest official figures.
