Sierra Leonean Migrant Mistakenly Deported from Spanish Enclave to Morocco

Aboubacar Barry, 19, is a young Sierra Leonean who was repatriated "by mistake" this week to Morocco, as part of the return of Moroccans who entered Ceuta in large numbers at the beginning of the week. He had been living in Casablanca for about four years before deciding on Sunday, May 2, to cross Ceuta to reach Spain.
Although Barry does not belong to the group of Moroccans who arrived in mass in Ceuta at the beginning of the week, he was repatriated to Morocco with several of them during the night of Tuesday, May 18. In an interview with El Faro de Ceuta, he denounces this practice and demands justice.
The notification letter of his return to Morocco that Barry received on May 13 clearly indicates that he entered the Spanish territory "illegally" and that he does not hold any valid passport or travel document. The document also specified that this return to Morocco must be carried out "as soon as possible" after receiving the notification. This is how he was repatriated during the night of May 18, with thousands of Moroccans who had entered Ceuta in mass.
Arrived clandestinely in Spain on May 2, Barry was immediately taken care of by the Red Cross. He then completed the registration formalities with the Ceuta police in charge of foreigners, his intention being to live in Spain and have his papers in order. He underwent two negative Covid-19 tests before being transferred two weeks later to a migrant center. "I took my photos and signed the documents," he recounts to El Faro de Ceuta to whom he sent his personal identification number (NIP) as well as his foreign identification number (NIE).
