Shell to Supply Morocco with LNG via Maghreb-Europe Pipeline in Energy Security Boost

A contract providing for the supply of 0.5 billion cubic meters of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) per year has just been signed between Shell International Trading Middle East Limited FZE and the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE).
Deliveries will begin via Spanish ports and arrive in Morocco through the Maghreb-Europe Gas Pipeline, before the LNG is distributed via future Moroccan methane terminals.
Leïla Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, welcomed this initiative, recalling that Morocco integrated the international LNG market in 2022. This new contract, for the official, will strengthen the country’s energy security, promote its competitiveness and stimulate its decarbonization strategy. The CEO of ONEE, Abderrahim El Hafidi, also welcomed the signing of this agreement, specifying that after several spot purchases of LNG in 2022, this medium-term agreement is a first for ONEE.
Mehdi Chennoufi, global manager at Shell LNG Marketing and Trading, expressed his satisfaction to collaborate with ONEE to meet Morocco’s gas demand. LNG, he said, offers a flexible and reliable energy source, playing a crucial role in the energy transition.
