Sewage Pollution Plagues Popular Tangier Beach, Raising Health Concerns

The Merkala beach, in Tangier, is once again grappling with sewage pollution. Residents have reported this new discharge, raising concerns about the state of the environment and the health of bathers.

According to eyewitness accounts, the source of this pollution would be the Amendis pumping station, located near the port of Tangier city. This infrastructure, belonging to the eponymous company, would be the origin of the discharge of large quantities of wastewater into the sea, thus contaminating the Merkala beach and its surroundings.

For now, the Amendis company has not officially communicated on this incident, leaving the exact causes of this new pollution in doubt. The residents of Tangier, fed up with the recurrence of these events, denounce the lack of lasting solutions to remedy this chronic problem. Many activists had already complained during the summer.

It should be noted that the Merkala beach is regularly affected by this type of pollution. Indeed, the proximity of the beach to watercourses receiving discharges from various sources of pollution (sanitation, public landfills, industries) makes it a black spot in terms of water quality.
