Senegal crowned but reprimanded: FIFA demands disciplinary sanctions

The players threatened to withdraw from the final when the referee, Jean-Jacques Ngambo, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, whistled a controversial penalty during stoppage time, a few minutes after disallowing a goal for the Lions of Teranga. Convinced by their captain, Sadio Mané, the Senegalese returned to the pitch a few minutes later. Brahim took the penalty with a Panenka, but goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved the shot. During extra time, Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye scored the winning goal for Senegal.

The highest authority in world football has, through a statement from his organization, congratulated Senegal on their triumph as well as the president of their federation, Abdoulaye Fall. He also praised the tournament hosted by Morocco, which he described as fantastic, both for their performance as finalists and for their exceptional role as hosts. However, Gianni Infantino firmly condemned the unacceptable scenes observed on the pitch and in the stands, stating that it is unacceptable to abandon the field of play in this way and that violence cannot be tolerated in sport, as it is simply not right.

The official insisted on the obligation to respect the decisions made by the match officials, both on and off the field. He stated that teams must compete on the pitch and within the laws of the game, affirming that any other behavior jeopardizes the very essence of football. According to him, it is the responsibility of teams and players to act responsibly and set an example for the supporters in the stadiums and the millions of viewers around the world.

Gianni Infantino added that the unpleasant scenes experienced on this day must be condemned and never repeated, reiterating that they have no place in football. He expressed his wish to see the competent disciplinary bodies of CAF take appropriate measures. Finally, he expressed his gratitude to King Mohammed VI for his constant support for football, as well as to Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and member of the FIFA Council, for his leadership and commitment to the sport.
