Seasonal Berry Harvest Brings Multicultural Workforce to Southern Spain's Huelva

The city of Huelva becomes multicultural during each annual berry harvest campaign due to the arrival in the region’s farms of Moroccan, Romanian and Bulgarian seasonal workers.

"We promote multiculturalism and we try to make them feel at ease," explains to EFE, Victoria Martín, the marketing manager of the Agromartín farm, specialized in strawberry production in Huelva. Cultural diversity is felt every season on this farm, which can accommodate up to 800 seasonal workers in furnished residences, with common areas and water fountains.

Around 600 seasonal workers are currently working on the farm for this strawberry campaign, which began in December and will end in May or June. In addition to the residences, a multipurpose room filled with games (pool, table football, darts) or that can serve as a dance floor, has been set up to allow them to have fun.

The farm has also provided them with buses to facilitate their travel to the city to shop for groceries or do errands. A Moroccan tent is also set up on the site to allow these Moroccan, Romanian and Bulgarian seasonal workers to celebrate their various festivals.

The contracts of these seasonal workers are written in their language and they receive free training as part of a project carried out in collaboration with the Huelva provincial council, which aims to enable these women to start their own business once they return to their countries in order to improve their living conditions.
