Scam Network Preys on Moroccan Expatriates with Fake Charity Videos

Moroccan expatriates (MREs) are victims of an internet scam orchestrated by a network of false benefactors. Using videos of very poor families published on the web, they manage to extort huge sums of money from MREs.
A scam like no other. The modus operandi of the network of false benefactors is to publish numerous videos on Facebook showing the extreme poverty of certain families, reports Assabah. Some family members speak of their difficult situation. Then, the members of the network communicate addresses, names and bank account numbers to receive the money transfers.
Many MREs have fallen into the trap of this network. They have transferred huge sums of money to it. Once the funds are transferred, the false benefactors simultaneously posted videos in which they simulated the delivery of certain donations to needy families. Videos of surgical operations, renovations of unsanitary housing, well drilling, etc. were also posted. With the funds raised, some members of the network invested in major real estate projects.
Some MREs eventually discovered the deception. They then filed numerous complaints with Moroccan consulates abroad. An investigation is underway to dismantle this false charity network.
