Saudi Princess Sparks Debate Over Origins of Moroccan Caftan

Saudi Princess Al Hanouf Bint Mamdouh bin Abdul Al Saud finds herself at the center of a controversy after declaring that the Moroccan caftan belongs to the Hijazi heritage.

It all started with a question an internet user asked the Saudi Princess Al Hanouf Bint Mamdouh bin Abdul Al Saud about the green caftan she wore during the celebration of the wedding of Prince Abdul Mateen, son of the Sultan of Brunei. The princess had made a post on the social network. "It was Saudi, especially from Yanbu in the Hejaz," she replied, specifying that it is the very region from which the Moroccan royal family originates. She will explain that this is why their cultural heritage has flourished and spread there.

Her response provoked the reaction of some Moroccan internet users. They pleaded for the preservation of their cultural heritage. One of them posted a photo of the Saudi star Lojaim Omran wearing and celebrating the Moroccan caftan. "The Saudi star Lojaim Omran praises the Moroccan caftan! Who would have thought a celebrity would be more honest than a PRINCESS?!?!?! Have a little dignity!" comments the internet user. This prompted Al Hanouf Bint Mamdouh bin Abdul Al Saud to quickly delete her tweet.

The Saudi princess then explained that her previous tweet was motivated by inquiries she had received, and that she is the kind of person who stays away from controversy. "Because I don’t like to stir up controversy or discord, I prefer discussions on my page to be conducted in a civilized and respectful manner, even if there are differences of opinion." And she added: "I have no choice but to delete my tweet to thus end the debate between you all."

After this clarification, some internet users expressed their support for the Saudi princess. "What you said is true, why delete it!" comments one of them.
