Sandstorm Disrupts Canary Islands Flights; Spain Praises Morocco’s Aid

Air transport has recently experienced serious disruptions in the Canary Islands, due to a sandstorm. The support of Morocco, one of the countries called upon to host the diverted flights, was hailed by the Spanish Minister of Transport, José Luis Ábalos.
On his Twitter account, he writes: "given the situation in the airspace of the Canary Islands, particularly due to the lack of visibility, I would like to commend the solidarity efforts deployed by the neighboring countries, in particular Morocco, Portugal, Mauritania and Cape Verde, as well as the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol), to minimize the impact of this situation".
According to him, this is the first time that air transport professionals have seen such bad weather for air transport in the Canary Islands.
On Sunday, February 23, the eight airports located on the Canary archipelago closed due to the strong winds laden with sand that considerably reduced visibility. As a result, some flights were diverted to Cape Verde, Morocco, Mauritania and Portugal.
