Sahrawi Activist's Likely Election to Spanish Congress Raises Diplomatic Tensions with Morocco

The Sahrawi activist, Tesh Sidi, number three on the Sumar party list, is a candidate in the legislative elections and will likely be elected as a deputy, which leads the Spanish National Intelligence Center (CNI) to fear an intensification of the activities of the Moroccan intelligence services that were already closely monitoring her.

The CNI knows that Tesh Sidi’s imminent arrival in the Congress of Deputies will not please Morocco. The presence of Podemos in the coalition government was already complicating relations with the kingdom. Even more so, the probable entry of a Sahrawi activist into Congress leads the CNI to believe that the Moroccan intelligence services will redouble their efforts, reports Moncloa, noting that the number two of Sumar, and Spain’s ambassador to the UN, Agustín Santos Maraver, is committed to the Sahrawi cause, even if many voices close to the Polisario accuse him of being close to Moroccan theses.

The espionage of the mobile phones of President Pedro Sanchez and some ministers using Pegasus, and the recognition by the latter of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, without the opinion of Congress, are subjects on which Tesh Sidi could focus her energy once she is a deputy. Moreover, her arrival in Congress risks causing complications if the Sumar party agrees to enter a coalition government, which constitutes a threat to bilateral relations with Morocco. The CNI is closely monitoring both Tesh Sidi and the Moroccan intelligence services.
