Sahara, Morocco and UN: a key US-backed step toward autonomy

During a daily press briefing, Stéphane Dujarric announced that Staffan de Mistura co-chaired negotiations on February 23 and 24 in close partnership with the United States. Supported by Massad Boulos, adviser to the American presidency, these discussions constitute the third interministerial meeting organized on this issue since January 2026.

The spokesperson stated that the talks led to “in-depth discussions” based on “Morocco’s autonomy proposal,” in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025). The international organization views this framework positively for the continuation of the diplomatic process.

However, the UN stressed that “significant work will nevertheless remain necessary” to definitively resolve the dispute. Future efforts will need to focus on the “key issue of the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara” in order to reach a final and mutually acceptable agreement between the parties.
