Ryanair: goodbye to paper... except in Morocco

The Ryanair airline is about to take a new step in its dematerialization strategy. The low-cost carrier has announced the permanent removal of paper boarding passes for its passengers, making the use of its mobile app essential on most of its routes. However, Morocco is not yet affected.

As of Wednesday, November 12, all passengers will be required to present a digital boarding pass via the myRyanair app. According to the company, this transition is part of an efficiency drive and will affect the 20% of customers who still used the printed version. Ryanair, which carries 207 million passengers per year, promises a "faster, smarter and more environmentally friendly travel experience".

This digital shift is not isolated; other airlines like easyJet or Wizz Air are already encouraging this practice. In most major European airports, the digital format has become the norm. However, this measure will not apply uniformly across the network. In Morocco, for example, passengers will have to continue to present a paper format, as the local authorities still require this physical document for boarding procedures. But discussions are underway to end the paper format in Morocco.

A mobile app, but Morocco will wait!

The myRyanair app thus becomes the central pivot of the traveler experience. It is not limited to boarding but also includes real-time flight tracking, receiving notifications in case of disruption, proposing alternative flights and managing travel documents. It also allows you to order drinks and snacks from your seat for priority service.

For Dara Brady, Ryanair’s Marketing Director, this is a "logical and gradual change". He reminded customers still using paper that they must download the app before the November 12 deadline. This digital transformation aims to streamline the customer journey while strengthening the company’s business model, which favors direct interactions via the smartphone.
