Ryanair Faces Backlash Over New Digital Boarding Pass Fees

The Irish low-cost airline Ryanair is under fire for the introduction of new fees related to the digital boarding pass. Will it extend this measure to travelers to Morocco?

Customers should pay additional fees to have their digital boarding pass. Otherwise, they would be forced to queue to pick up a printed one at the airport. This is evidenced by the screenshots shared on X (formerly Twitter) by passengers. The company’s app asks them to randomly select a seat in advance for a cost between £8 and £21 if they want to download their digital boarding pass. On the web, they are criticizing this new Ryanair policy.

"I simply can’t believe your new policy of not allowing passengers to create a (mobile or printed) boarding pass unless they buy a seat, forcing them to join a (30m+ longer) check-in queue to do so for no other reason than for you to make a few quid. Outrageous," fumes an angry customer of the low-cost airline in a post. "@askryanair I know you’re cheap, but forcing me to pay for a seat or have to go to the airport earlier to pick up a boarding pass in person is RIDICULOUS," another person gets annoyed.

Not all passengers are affected by the latest fees, reports Daily Mail, adding that some claim to have received a free digital boarding pass. "Passengers have the choice to select a seat for a modest sum or be randomly assigned a seat for free," a Ryanair spokesperson said, without specifying whether the carrier was forcing travelers to pay for a digital boarding pass.
