Ryanair Faces Backlash as Domestic Flight Prices Soar in Morocco

Despite the criticism of many Moroccans, the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair continues to charge high prices for domestic flights.

For a few weeks now, Ryanair’s high fares, the payment of domestic flight tickets in foreign currency and not in dirhams have been the subject of debate. The price of a ticket between Marrakech and Tetouan has gone from 140 dirhams to 850, that of a flight between Marrakech and Tangier has gone from 240 dirhams to 853 dirhams, as observed by the website Al3omq. As for the price of a ticket between Agadir and Tangier, it has risen to 853 dirhams instead of 163.

In Parliament, the Haraki group called in April for the Minister of Transport and Logistics to protect the rights of the Irish low-cost airline’s customers. In a question addressed to Mohammed Abdeljalil, Driss Sentissi indicated that "the company’s first flights in April 2024 experienced strong demand from travelers. However, what displeased travelers was the payment method imposed by the company for the purchase of these tickets, namely payment in foreign currency via the international bank card, which many of the company’s customers consider to be a deception on its part."

"Having noted that tickets were only available for purchase through international Moroccan bank cards drawing on foreign exchange allocations, the ministry reminded the company of its commitments on March 29, 2024 and ordered it to comply with them as soon as possible," the Ministry of Transport and Logistics explained in a recent press release. Despite this reminder, Ryanair has still not complied with its commitments.
