Ryanair 100% digital: why Morocco remains an exception to the digital boarding pass
The airline Ryanair is taking a new step in its dematerialization strategy. As of this Wednesday, November 12, it is no longer possible for passengers to check in or print their boarding pass directly at the airport, except in Morocco.
From now on, all travelers must check in online before their arrival and download their digital boarding pass via the Ryanair mobile app. This measure, presented as a way to offer a "faster, simpler, stress-free and paperless journey", effectively eliminates the famous 55 pound sterling penalty that was charged for printing at the counter.
The company specifies that passengers will still be able to print their boarding pass at home if they wish. It also assures that customers who would have a problem with their smartphone (loss, battery) will be able to be assisted by the staff at the boarding gate to obtain a digital duplicate, provided they have checked in online beforehand.
Morocco remains an exception to the "all-digital"
This new policy applies to almost the entire network, but some destinations are exceptions. This is particularly the case for Morocco. As the Moroccan authorities continue to require a physical document, passengers departing from the Kingdom will still have to present a printed boarding pass. Discussions would be underway to try to extend the 100% digital procedure to Morocco in the future.
Ryanair’s Marketing Director, Dara Brady, justified this move to "100% paperless" by the desire to offer an "enhanced travel experience" through the app. This transition should be facilitated by the fact that, according to CEO Michael O’Leary, "between 85 and 90% of our passengers already show up with a smartphone". The company also announced a slight increase in the allowed size for the free cabin baggage.
