Russian Truck Manufacturer Kamaz Eyes Expansion into Moroccan Market

For about ten years, the Russian automobile manufacturer Kamaz, a leader in the production of heavy trucks, has been seeking to establish itself in Morocco, one of its priority expansion markets in Africa. It has not given up on this ambition.
Kamaz wishes to penetrate new markets in Africa, including Morocco, the press service of the automobile manufacturer reported to the Russian news agency TASS. "We are represented on the African market in many countries and are interested in penetrating new markets, including Morocco," their representatives said.
This is not the first time that Kamaz has shown interest in the Moroccan market. Previously, the Russian newspaper Izvestia had already revealed that major Russian automakers such as GAZ, Kamaz and AvtoVAZ were expressing interest in the Moroccan market.
This interest of the Russian manufacturer in the Moroccan market is explained by several factors. Morocco has indeed become one of the main manufacturing and assembly centers in Africa and the Arab world, hosting large factories of international companies such as Renault, Peugeot and Stellantis. This appeal makes the business climate in Morocco particularly attractive for major investments, particularly in the automotive and truck industry.
However, Kamaz’s ambition could face certain difficulties. The Russian manufacturer must face fierce commercial competition. European and Asian companies are firmly established in the kingdom and maintain solid relations with the Moroccan government. In addition to commercial competition, there are also political and diplomatic factors. The fact that Morocco maintains close economic and commercial relations with the European Union (EU) could be an obstacle for Russian companies, "in a context where Moscow is facing Western sanctions imposed following the Ukrainian crisis."
