Russia Signals Support for Morocco’s Position on Western Sahara

During a press conference on Russia’s diplomatic successes and challenges encountered in 2024, Sergey Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, made a promise to Morocco on the Sahara issue.
The Rabat-Moscow axis is strengthening. "Morocco is a friendly country. We have good projects and we are helping the Moroccans to solve the problems that fall within the purview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in particular the Sahara issue," said Sergey Lavrov. However, he notes that "the previous resolutions, adopted more than forty years ago in favor of the right to self-determination of the Sahara, have proven ineffective." For him, "it is necessary to seek agreements accepted by all." The Russian Foreign Minister will add: "We know how important this is for Morocco and we will do our best to move things forward."
Certainly, Morocco and Russia maintain good diplomatic relations, reaffirm their determination to strengthen their cooperation through continuous political dialogue and exchange of visits, but Moscow has never openly approved the resolutions on the Sahara that usually support Morocco’s efforts within the framework of the political process under the auspices of the UN. It has always abstained from voting against the UN resolutions on the Sahara.
For years, Morocco has demanded a position from its partners on the Sahara issue. A question that is close to its heart. France, the United States, Germany, Spain and Israel have already crossed the country. Will Russia follow in their footsteps?
