Russia Reclaims Top Spot as Morocco’s Wheat Supplier, Ukraine Absent

Russia is back on the list of Morocco’s main suppliers of soft wheat, after being absent last March. Ukraine is no longer on it.
In March, Morocco received 61,580 tons of Russian wheat at the port of Casablanca, or 25.76% of its total imports during that month. These figures place Russia in third place on the list of Morocco’s main wheat suppliers last month, behind France (114,611 tons) and Germany (62,830 tons), according to the latest statistics from the National Federation of Grain and Legume Traders (FNCL). Ukraine, on the other hand, is absent from this list. In February and March, it had exported 97,797 tons to Morocco.
In April, the kingdom imported 239,021 tons compared to 598,530 tons purchased in March, a net decrease of 359,509 tons. The volume of wheat imported by Morocco in January and April 2024 amounts to 1,844,607 tons, far from the target of 2.5 million tons set by the National Interprofessional Office of Cereals and Legumes (ONICL) on November 21, 2023, when announcing the implementation of a new restitution system for the import of soft wheat. In a statement to the Le360 site, Omar Yacoubi, president of the National Federation of Grain and Legume Traders (FNCL), had explained that imports vary according to market conditions, the most competitive origins and the supply needs of the local market.
