Royal Air Maroc Workers Contest ’Illegal’ Meeting Amid Company Restructuring

While a meeting of the works council devoted to the economic and financial situation as well as the social rescue plan of the national company Royal Air Maroc should have been held yesterday, voices have been raised to contest this meeting. A warning has been addressed to the works council against this meeting described as "illegal".
Seized by the Moroccan Association of Airline Pilots (AMPL) on this dispute, the law firm of Mohamed Fekhar contested this meeting on the grounds that the legal quorum of employees at the works council will not be reached, due to the retirement of CDB Driss Harradji on March 3, 2020.
In a letter addressed to the general management of Royal Air Maroc, the law firm informed the general management of RAM that any decision or consultation resulting from this Works Council will be null and void until partial elections are held.
For the law firm, this meeting should notably rule on the collective dismissal that the management of Royal Air Maroc is preparing to execute for economic and structural reasons. As a reminder, this austerity plan had been announced on June 9 by the Minister of Tourism, Crafts, Air Transport and Social Economy, Nadia Fettah Alaoui, before Parliament. It is accompanied by a range of measures to combat the fallout from the crisis.
Referring to a report from the International Air Transport Association, the minister had announced that the report shows a reduction in Moroccan air traffic of around 5 million passengers, with the resulting risks in terms of financial losses and jobs in the sector.
