Royal Air Maroc remains ahead of Air Algérie and accelerates further

The new data published by OAG place Ethiopian Airlines comfortably at the top of the continent with 2.087 million seats in September, ahead of Safair (1.076 million) and Egyptair (890,773).

Royal Air Maroc comes just behind with 793,257 seats, compared with 756,627 for Air Algérie, in fifth place. The gap between the two airlines thus stands at 36,630 seats.

The main development concerns their growth rates. RAM’s capacity jumped by 19.2% compared with September 2025, representing nearly 128,000 additional seats. Air Algérie grew by 13.3%, with approximately 89,000 additional seats.

The situation was reversed one month earlier: in August, Air Algérie posted annual growth of 16.8%, compared with 13.2% for Royal Air Maroc. The Moroccan airline was nevertheless already fourth in Africa with 868,100 seats, ahead of the 825,900 seats of its Algerian rival.

Morocco becomes Africa’s third-largest air market

This growth accompanies that of the Moroccan market as a whole. Morocco has 2.072 million scheduled seats in September, up 10% year-on-year. It is now the continent’s third-largest air market, behind Egypt and South Africa. Algeria has 1.055 million seats, with growth of 7.6%.

Casablanca is also confirming its rise. With approximately 730,000 seats and growth of 13.5%, Mohammed V Airport ranks fourth in Africa. Algiers is sixth with 580,000 seats and limited growth of 3.8%. Marrakech also appears in the Top 10, ranking seventh with 530,000 seats.

Royal Air Maroc’s momentum is among the strongest of the continent’s ten leading airlines. Only Air Peace performs better in percentage terms, with a spectacular increase of 54.7%. RAM posts the second-highest growth, ahead of Air Cairo (+14.9%), Air Algérie (+13.3%) and Ethiopian Airlines (+10%).
