Royal Air Maroc Plans Fleet Upgrade, Considers Airbus A320neo Over Boeing 737 Max

The national airline is considering acquiring new aircraft to replace the Boeing 737 NG. In this regard, it is preparing to launch a call for tenders.

In a statement to International Flight Network, the Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of RAM, Abdelhamid Addou, announced that the airline will launch a call for tenders to replace the Boeing 737 NG next year. He indicated that it is unlikely that the company will "automatically" choose the Boeing 737 Max. RAM is rather leaning towards the Airbus A320neo. The RAM boss also stated, during a press conference held on March 17, that there are currently no plans to order more Boeing 737 Max.

Severely hit by the health crisis related to Covid-19, the national airline had to remove a total of ten aircraft from its fleet: seven were sold to alleviate financial difficulties and three whose leasing contracts were not renewed. Its fleet is now made up of nearly 40 Boeing 737s, all except two of which are 737 NGs. Only 27 Boeing 737-800s and one 737 Max 8 are currently active. Royal Air Maroc was originally supposed to receive four Boeing 737 Max 8, but the company has decided to cancel two of them.
