Royal Air Maroc Cuts 177 Cabin Crew Jobs in Latest Airline Layoffs

More than six months after the dismissal of Royal Air Maroc’s airline pilots, the national carrier will announce a new wave of layoffs. Nearly 177 cabin crew (PNC) members of its subsidiary Atlas Multiservices (AMS) have received their dismissal letter for economic reasons.

This decision takes effect this Monday, February 8, reports Le360. It comes after several rounds of negotiations with the social partners in accordance with Articles 66 and 67 of the Labor Code.

Just like in August 2020, a request for dismissal for economic reasons was submitted for approval to the prefecture of the districts of El Fida-Mers Sultan. After the approval of the prefectural commission responsible for ruling on this request, the governor’s decision was recorded on January 29. As of September 30, 2020, Atlas Multiservices (AMS) had 1,594 employees, 9 of whom were assigned to the RAM headquarters. As for the rest, or 1,585 employees, they are made available to Royal Air Maroc according to the following allocation: 1,044 cabin crew and 541 ground staff.

Heavily impacted by the consequences of the health crisis, RAM was forced to partially terminate the provision contract with AMS as of October 1, 2020. In a report drawn up by a statutory auditor, accompanying the request for authorization submitted to the prefectural authorities, it is established that "the partial termination of the provision contract by RAM threatens the financial balance of AMS and its continuity of operations in the event of maintenance of the employees concerned by the termination". This decision should "impact in the very short term the company’s ability to meet its financial commitments, and will in particular make it impossible to meet the payment of salaries to the remaining staff and its social security contributions and tax obligations," the same report states.

Consequently, AMS is forced to consider the dismissal for economic reasons of the employees concerned by the partial termination of the provision contract operated by RAM in order to ensure its solvency and its short-term continuity of operations and above all to preserve the remaining jobs of more than 1,280 employees.
