Road Trip Danger: Moroccan Travelers Face Theft Epidemic on Spanish Highways

As the summer period approaches, Moroccans residing abroad (MRE) traveling to Morocco by road are reminded of the persistent risk of theft at service areas in Spain. Organized networks repeatedly target the vehicles of vacationers, requiring increased vigilance.

The phenomenon is particularly concentrated on the major Mediterranean highways, such as the A-7 motorway, with frequent reports in the regions of Catalonia, Valencia and Murcia. Vehicles registered abroad, often loaded with luggage and gifts, are specifically targeted by these criminal gangs.

The most common modus operandi is the quick theft from a vehicle left unattended during a break. The perpetrators take advantage of an unlocked door or do not hesitate to break a window to steal bags and visible objects. Diversion techniques are also observed: an individual signals a false mechanical problem on the car to divert the driver’s attention, while an accomplice proceeds with the theft.

These networks exploit known vulnerabilities: fatigue from long journeys, a relaxation of vigilance during stops, and the presumed presence of cash and valuable items in the vehicles.

Faced with these risks, a series of practical recommendations are disseminated by the authorities. It is necessary to systematically lock all the doors of the vehicle, even for a very short stop, and not to leave any bag, phone or other valuable object in plain sight. It is also advisable to favor payments by bank card to reduce the amount of cash carried and to be wary of individuals offering unsolicited assistance at rest areas.

Prevention remains the most effective measure against this type of crime. Constant vigilance during breaks and good preparation in advance are essential to secure the vacation journey.
