Rescue at Sea: 16 Migrants Intercepted in Strait of Gibraltar Crossing

While traveling, on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, under precarious conditions, on board two kayaks and a patera in the Strait of Gibraltar, 4 Moroccans and 12 sub-Saharan Africans were rescued by the Spanish rescue services.

According to El faro de Ceuta, which has the information from maritime sources, the notification of a merchant ship located two miles off Tarifa reached the maritime rescue team on Tuesday morning. Immediately activated, it found the kayak reported by the merchant ship with two men of Moroccan origin on board.

A little later, the Civil Guard helicopter announced the presence of another kayak near the first one. Here too, two other men of Moroccan origin, including a minor, were trying to reach the Iberian peninsula. The four migrants, apparently in good health, were made available to the national police and transferred to the Port of Algeciras from where they will be sent back to Morocco, indicates the same media.

On the same Tuesday morning, 12 sub-Saharan Africans on board a patera were rescued by the "Maritime rescue", a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that has launched a rescue line for migrants in distress in the Mediterranean Sea. They will be taken care of by the Guardamar concepción arenal, which has been tasked with rescuing them and transferring them to the Port of Algeciras.

According to Helena Maleno, spokesperson for the Walking Frontiers collective, "the patera would have left Tangier. Unlike the four Moroccan migrants, these twelve people will be taken care of and welcomed in Spain by various NGOs," reports the same source.
