Report Reveals Abuse and Dangers Faced by Moroccan Women Migrants in Spain

The Andalusian Association for Human Rights (APDHA) has just published its 2022 report on the human rights situation at the borders. This year, the report focused on the situation of migrant women, particularly Moroccans.
In this document, the APDHA denounces the violations of the rights of migrant women at land borders or during sea voyages. According to the data contained in the report, at least 10 out of 100 women died or disappeared at sea in 2021 while trying to immigrate to Spain. This high rate of women’s deaths is due to the fact that they, often pregnant or accompanied by their children, have difficulty saving themselves and saving their offspring in the event of shipwrecks of the makeshift boats that transport them.
Beyond the security risks inherent in the migratory transit, the report also emphasizes the rights violations suffered by women at the border, including arbitrary arrests. "We must recognize that migration is for many young people and women an option to survive and face the contexts of physical, psychological, sexual or structural aggression that they, their families or their communities live," explains the APDH.
And to add: "The condition of multiple discrimination, irregularity and lack of access to full rights with which we welcome travelers, is a starting point to continue to perpetuate and legitimize other forms of violence," laments the association, which also exposed the situation of women in the Foreigners Detention Centers (CIE), that of seasonal workers or that of "mule women" "who continue to suffer an unstable situation due to the health crisis and the closure of borders."
The report also warns that these inequalities generate situations of precariousness, as is the case for single mothers in Morocco or women working in textile factories.
