Rape Suspect Dies by Suicide in Rabat Courthouse Custody

A detainee committed suicide in the premises of the Rabat Court of Appeal using his clothes. Accused of raping a minor, he was just minutes away from being presented to the prosecutor when he committed suicide.
The man had been arrested on Thursday by the judicial police elements of Rabat. Placed in custody for the purposes of the investigation, he was taken last Sunday to the Rabat Court of Appeal to be presented to the King’s Prosecutor. According to the daily Assabah, "while waiting his turn to appear before the magistrate, the man asked the police to take him to the toilet".
After relieving him of anything that could pose a danger, the guards let him enter the toilet alone. "There, he tied his pants to the iron bars of the raised toilet windows and placed his underwear around his neck, which he tied to the pants, before swinging into the void".
Dispatched to the scene, the scientific police and the coroner concluded that it was a suicide, but "his guards were summoned to explain the laxity they may have shown", the same source said.
