Ramadan in France to Begin March 1, 2025, CFCM Announces

Muslims in France now know the start date of the month of Ramadan, as well as the amount of zakat al-fitr. The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) made the announcements on Tuesday.

According to the calculation criteria adopted by the organization in 2013, the visibility of the new moon "will be observable from Friday, February 28, 2025 in almost the entire globe," the CFCM said in a statement. "The first day of the month of Ramadan 1446 H will (therefore) be Saturday, March 1, 2025," the Muslim organization announced.

The amount of zakat al-Fitr, reevaluated in 2024 by certain religious and humanitarian organizations, remains unchanged. According to the CFCM, this obligatory alms intended for the poor regardless of their religious affiliation is again set at 9 euros per person. "This amount, calculated in accordance with religious rules, takes into account the means of the donor as well as the needs of the beneficiary," the organization indicates. The CFCM specifies that there are "legitimate differences in the assessment of the amount of this alms, generally between 7 and 12 euros. Each believer can therefore refer to his usual religious authority to pay the amount it would have recommended".

What about the compensation alms (fidya) owed by people who are unable to make up for the missed fasting days due to a permanent inability to fast? "According to the legal opinion taken as a reference by the person concerned, the amount of this alms, per day missed, may vary between the equivalent of zakat al-Fitr (i.e. between 7 and 12 euros), half of it (i.e. between 3.5 and 6 euros) or a quarter of it (i.e. between 2 and 3 euros)," the CFCM also specifies. "In any case," the Muslim organization "recommends that everyone follow the opinion that seems to best fit their situation".
