Racist Insults: Omar El Hilali’s Indictment to Protect Lamine Yamal
At 22 years old, Espanyol’s full-back Omar El Hilali displays rare maturity. Ahead of the derby against FC Barcelona, the Moroccan international reflects on his club’s poor run of results and firmly denounces the persistent racism in the stadiums.
The "Pericos" defender is going through a grueling season marked by a series of thirteen matches without a win. Despite the pressure and criticism on social media, which he prefers to ignore to remain focused, El Hilali remains combative. According to La Vanguardia, the player refuses to discuss Europe, preferring to focus on maintaining his team’s status and the importance of keeping a clean sheet to regain success.

This Saturday’s duel against Barça at the Camp Nou promises to be decisive. El Hilali approaches this match with ambition, refusing to settle for a draw: "We are not going there to draw because we know what we are capable of. Our intention is to win." He will reunite with Joan Garcia, his former teammate who has joined the Blaugranas, whose level of performance he praises.
The full-back also addressed the incident on March 1 involving Rafa Mir, who allegedly hurled a xenophobic insult at him. "It happened because it happened, I’m not going to make up something like that," he assures, emphasizing the seriousness of such remarks coming from a player. While he chose to alert the referee without leaving the field, he insists on the need to break the silence so that these attitudes cease definitively.
Omar El Hilali also denounces the racist chants targeting Muslims in the Spanish stands. He particularly defends Lamine Yamal, who has chosen to represent Spain. "Lamine chose Spain even though he could have played for Morocco, the least he deserves is respect," affirms the defender. For him, these insults are all the more absurd as they sometimes target the very players of the supporters who utter them.

Under contract until 2027, the native of L’Hospitalet wishes to extend his adventure with Espanyol, although he gives priority to the recovery of sporting director Fran Garagarza. Keeping his feet on the ground, he continues to live with his parents despite his professional status: "My parents have always taught me that I am no more than anyone else." This simplicity helps him manage his daily life between training and family commitments.
