Rabat Unveils Ambitious Urban Renewal Plan to Modernize Capital

The capital Rabat is preparing to undergo major urban changes with the widening of several roads, the creation of new green spaces and parking lots, as well as the modernization of many neighborhoods. This ambitious project is part of an integrated development vision, aimed at reconciling investment, governance and the well-being of the inhabitants.
Thus, the district of the Moroccan capital is about to undergo a profound urban transformation, with the aim of modernizing its landscape and improving the living environment of its inhabitants. This large-scale project, which is part of the new generation of urban planning documents in the country, notably plans the widening of many streets, the modification of the plan of certain neighborhoods and the creation of new green spaces.
This urban redevelopment project, initiated more than two decades ago, aims to boost investment and create an integrated and harmonious urban space. Concretely, the plan provides for the construction of six-story buildings, surrounded by green spaces and wide alleys, in the neighborhoods of Kamra, Bouhlal and Diour Houmer, among others. The Assalam Avenue will also be affected by these transformations, with the construction of similar buildings.
On the Al Mohit Al Hadi Avenue, five-story buildings will be built, while the coastal area of Nwaïl will welcome six-story buildings. The project also provides for the construction of three-story buildings on the site of the former scrap metal market. The Moustapha Assayeh Avenue will be redeveloped to accommodate tourist, recreational and residential facilities.
In addition to the construction of new buildings, the project plans to widen several arteries such as the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah Avenue and the Al Kifah Avenue. Green spaces, shopping centers, schools, mosques and parking lots will also be created. A square offering a breathtaking view of the sea and a health center will complete these developments.
Concerned about the social impact of these transformations, the authorities insist on the need to adopt a participatory approach. The widening and construction work will be carried out in consultation with the inhabitants, respecting their rights and interests. In Yaâcoub Al Mansour, the majority of neighborhoods will see their dwellings gain one or two floors. Rehousing solutions will be studied for the inhabitants affected by the work.
Finally, the project pays particular attention to urban mobility. The creation of new access roads and parking lots aims to streamline traffic. Public transport programs, particularly the tramway extension project, will be taken into account in the redevelopment of the district.
