Rabat Cathedral Launches Fundraiser for Undocumented Migrants Amid COVID-19 Crisis

A fundraising campaign has been initiated for the benefit of undocumented migrants living in the Kingdom, regardless of nationality and religion, by the Saint-Pierre Cathedral of Rabat.

This operation was launched on Thursday, March 26, as part of the wave of national solidarity observed following the health crisis facing the Kingdom. These migrants, now confined due to the health emergency, were living from odd jobs.

Christian worshippers are informed of this operation through word of mouth and also thanks to a WhatsApp group created for the occasion. "And then, it spread and people were sensitive to it," said the cathedral’s priest. "People are generous, the Moroccans in particular, but also the Europeans," he added.

"Just this morning, and since 10 a.m., I was able to feed 85 people. Yesterday, it was 110 people, and on Thursday it was 66 people," he says proudly. He also adds that he was also able to count on the "Caritas" church of Rabat, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Jood association in this fundraising campaign.

Once the donations are collected, Father Daniel Nourissat distributes them to the migrants who come to the church with a list of people they live with. It is often rice, canned sardines, flour, sugar, cheese, soap, powdered milk, pasta.

"I don’t have a precise plan. My only plan is to make sure people don’t starve to death, that’s all. And I hope that Moroccan society takes care of countless Moroccans who are in the same situation, street guards in particular, and organizes to help them," he added.
