Rabat: Alex Iwobi criticized after controversial video on his hotel in Morocco

In this 10-second video posted on his Snapchat account with over 570,000 subscribers, upon his arrival in Rabat on Sunday, we see Alex Iwobi filming himself in his room with a surprised look, before sharing the view from his window overlooking small buildings, with satellite dishes and laundry hanging out to dry. The video, which went viral on social media, sparked a heated controversy. Several Moroccan supporters criticized the Fulham player, pointing out that the Moroccan capital is full of high-end hotels and that this establishment was most likely chosen by the Nigerian Football Federation.

Facing the criticism, the 19-year-old player posted a new video on Snapchat on Monday to try to justify himself. "I’ve seen some mockery, it’s just a matter of perspective. Because I took a snap of the view, people said, this guy is not grateful. But I didn’t say a word," assured the former Everton player, lying on the bed in his hotel room. The Nigerian international added: "I just looked around like that. I didn’t say a word. I’m comfortable, I’m playing Mario Kart. Let me focus. We have a big game coming up."

Second in Group C, behind South Africa, Nigeria will face Gabon this Thursday in the 2026 World Cup playoff semi-final at the Moulay Hassan stadium in Rabat. In case of victory, the Super Eagles will face the DR Congo or Cameroon in the final.
