Queen Letizia Opens Alhambra Exhibition Showcasing Berber Culture and Influence

’’La Granada Zirí del siglo XI y el universo Bereber’’, this is the name of the exhibition inaugurated by the Queen of Spain Letizia, on Thursday, at the Palacio de Carlos V in the Alhambra in Granada. This opening, which was attended by several personalities from the cultural and political world, aims to promote Berber culture.
The exhibition, carried out in close collaboration with Dr. Leila Mezian Benjelloun, President of the Leila Mezian Foundation, aims to make known the potential and richness of Berber culture. Moreover, it aims to highlight the profound influence that this culture has exerted in the Iberian Peninsula, in Andalusia.
Main contributor to the Andalusian exhibition, Leila Mezian Benjelloun has made a large part of her private collection available for the exhibition. Thus, jewelry from different regions of Morocco, ceramic and basketry works, pottery, carpets, textiles, embroidery and weapons from different eras were exhibited. All works that tell the story and the multidisciplinary cultural heritage of the Amazighs.
The exhibition will remain open until April 21, 2020. It will have to give way to a large permanent museum of Amazigh arts in the gardens of the Alhambra, on the initiative of Dr. Leila Mezian Benjelloun.
