Protesters Demand Justice for Moroccan Teen's Death in Spanish Custody

A year after the death of Ilyas Tahiri, asphyxiated under the knee of a police officer, many people, members of civil society, trade unions and relatives of the young Moroccan, organized a sit-in in front of the courthouse in the city of Almeria. They call on the Spanish justice system to open an investigation into this case.

Ilyas Tahiri is a young Moroccan, originally from Tetouan, who emigrated to Spain. But unfortunately, he will find death in a juvenile center in Almeria, in July 2019, in the "same violent way as the African-American George Floyd". And it is so that justice is done for him, that this sit-in was organized.

Mourad El Ajouti, lawyer and coordinator of the "Coalition for Justice for Ilyas", said that "the coalition is still closely following the case", stressing that "the anniversary of the death is an opportunity to denounce the circumstances of the murder of the young Moroccan" aged 18, according to Hespress.com

During the sit-in, the coalition expressed its dissatisfaction with the treatment given to the case by the prosecutor who spoke of "excessive use of force" when it is a "full-fledged crime". For the lawyer, it is important that the people involved in the murder of the "Moroccan George Floyd" be arrested for the peace of mind of Ilyas Tahiri’s family "psychologically affected by the violent death of the young man". It has also seized the Almeria court requesting "a review of the case".

It should be noted that last month, human rights defenders in Morocco had, for their part, demonstrated, in front of the Spanish consulate in Tetouan to demand justice, indicates the same source.
