AI-Powered Cameras to Combat School Violence in Morocco, Education Ministry Says

To curb the rise of violence in educational institutions, the Ministry of National Education is betting on cutting-edge technology. Minister Mohamed Saad Berrada announced the deployment of surveillance cameras equipped with artificial intelligence (AI), a tool designed to drastically strengthen security within schools.
These new generation devices are not limited to simple video recording. Thanks to artificial intelligence, they are designed to analyze video streams and, most importantly, to "detect acts of violence in real-time," as the minister explained during a parliamentary session.
The mechanism is intended to be reactive: as soon as an incident is identified by the AI system, an alert is sent "immediately" to the school administration or the relevant authorities. The ministry’s stated objective is to "strengthen surveillance and immediate control of educational establishments." In other words, it aims to be able to react much faster in case of a problem to "ensure a safer school environment."
While this technological measure is significant, it is nevertheless part of a broader strategy to combat school violence. The minister recalled that it complemented other actions deemed essential, such as the development of sports and cultural activities, the work of listening and psychological support units for vulnerable students, and ongoing cooperation with security services.
