Poultry Prices Soar in Morocco, Raising Concerns Ahead of Ramadan

Bad news for Moroccans. The price of poultry continues to rise, reaching 30 dirhams per kilogram compared to 18 dirhams a few months ago. A rise that is causing concern, as the holy month of Ramadan approaches.
Moroccan households, whose purchasing power is already weakened by the general rise in food prices, are not at the end of their troubles. Despite assurances from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Inter-professional Federation of the Poultry Sector (FISA) that had promised a stabilization of the price of poultry, the situation has remained unchanged.
The continued rise in poultry prices is causing concern, especially as the holy month of Ramadan approaches. According to FISA, this price increase is explained by the increase in demand for chicken, following the dizzying rise in the price of red meat. Another factor, the intermediaries between the producers and the consumers. To overcome these difficulties, the Federation recommends developing integrated ecosystems, reducing marginal costs and promoting the development of industrial slaughterhouses.
Mohamed Aaboud, president of the National Association of Broiler Chicken Breeders in Morocco, justifies this rise in poultry prices by the poor quality of the chicks due to poor breeding conditions and climate change. The professional calls on the competent authorities to take urgent measures to guarantee price stability and protect breeders and consumers.
According to FISA data, some 735,000 tons of poultry meat were produced by the end of October 2024, compared to 695,000 tons a year earlier, an increase of 6%. Also, 5.5 billion eggs were consumed by the end of October 2024, compared to 5.3 billion by the end of October 2023, an increase of 4%.
