Poultry Prices Soar in Casablanca as New Year’s Demand Spikes

Poultry meat prices have seen a sharp increase in supermarkets in Casablanca, just days before the end of year celebrations.
Faced with strong demand, turkey meat prices have increased, employees of many large stores told Hespress. According to them, many customers are asking for white meats for the New Year’s Eve table.
Thus, "chickens fed on natural cereals are sold for 500 dirhams and more per piece," they said. The prices of the new "organic" chicken meat products offered by many supermarkets range between 40 and 140 dirhams per kilo.
Chicken costs 13 dirhams per kilogram, turkey varies between 20 and 25 dirhams, the price of boneless chicken is set at around 65 dirhams per kg in the popular markets of Casablanca. As for the price of whole slaughtered chicken, it is set at around 32 dirhams per kilo compared to 29 dirhams a week ago.
White meat consumption in Morocco reached 529,000 tons last year, including 90,000 tons of turkey meat, while egg consumption is around 5.1 billion units, according to the Inter-professional Association of the Poultry Sector in Morocco.
