Portugal Evaluates Port Conditions for Delayed Portimão-Tangier Ferry Service

Portugal has provided explanations regarding the delay in launching the Portimão-Tanger Med maritime line, initially scheduled for early July. Morocco has associated the French, Portuguese and Italian ports with the Marhaba 2021 operation to the detriment of Spain, its traditional partner.
"It is reported that the operational conditions of the port of Portimão are being evaluated, in collaboration with shipowners and various authorities, in order to start a ferry service between Portimão and Tanger," the Portuguese port said in a message posted on its website, thus denying reports that Spain had put pressure on Portugal to cancel the crossing of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) from the port in southern Portugal to the Moroccan port. It is still not possible to confirm whether the connection will be established, the port continues.
An agreement has already been reached between the port authorities of the two countries. The only problem: the launch of the line requires the mobilization of certain services under other Portuguese government departments. According to a source close to the file cited by Le360, there is still no border police at the port of Portimao.
