The Democratic Organization of Labour (ODT) is one of the unions behind the day of action. The Moroccan organization is part of an international coalition opposed to the sea transport of arms to war zones. Casablanca and Tangier are listed in the communiqué du syndicat italien USB du 28 octobre.

The movement now brings together more than 25 unions representing 113 ports in 22 countries and regions across five continents. The arrangements vary: 24-hour strikes have been announced in particular in France, Italy, Greece, India and Turkey, while work stoppages in Morocco may last up to two hours.

Tangier joins a mobilization that extends beyond Morocco

The mobilization began at a meeting of port unions in Istanbul last May. The Moroccan ODT joined, among others, France’s CGT, Italy’s USB and Greek and Turkish organizations. Their declaration calls for an end to the transport of weapons and ammunition to war zones, while also defending wages, jobs and working conditions.

The BDS movement supports the day of action and calls on workers to refuse to handle military, energy or dual-use goods destined for Israel, the British outlet Novara Media reports.

In Morocco, the transit of military equipment has already sparked controversy. In November 2024, the stopover in Tanger Med of a ship carrying weapons for Israel notably prompted reactions after a Spanish port refused to receive it.

The October 30 mobilization will also extend to the ports of Marseille, Genoa, Barcelona, Hamburg, Oakland and Bombay. The previous international day of action, held on February 6, brought together 20 ports in five countries.
