Morocco’s Trade with Israel Soars: Textile and Agri-Food Exports Defy Protest Movement

Despite a popular protest movement in Morocco calling for the severing of ties with Israel, official international trade data for the year 2024 shows a different economic reality. According to statistics from the United Nations trade database (UN COMTRADE), the volume of Moroccan exports to Israel reached $141.55 million.
The textile and clothing industry is at the forefront of the export sectors, accounting for more than half of this total, with a value of $76 million. This amount is mainly broken down between non-knitted garments, worth $52.81 million, and knitted garments, accounting for $23.80 million.
The agri-food sector is also a pillar of these trade relations. Morocco has exported $34.41 million worth of sugar and confectionery products. There are also other food preparations, particularly processed products made from vegetables, fruits and dried fruits, worth $3.95 million.
Beyond these consumer goods, exports reveal links in industrial and strategic sectors. The value of exported cars reached $11.43 million, that of electrical and electronic equipment $3.42 million, while inorganic chemicals exceeded $1 million.
The diversity of traded goods testifies to the extent of these trade relations between the two countries. The list also includes aircraft and space equipment, meat and fish preparations, footwear, cereals, dairy products, and paper.
Finally, a wide range of other products completes this picture, spread across various sectors such as furniture, pharmaceutical preparations, iron and steel, plastics, machinery, optical and medical equipment, as well as glassware, jewelry and toys. All of these exchanges, which continue in a context of demonstrations calling for an end to normalization, reveal a gap between the prevailing trade policies and the demands of a part of public opinion.
