Poll: Most Spaniards Support Military Defense of Ceuta and Melilla Against Potential Moroccan Attack

The majority of Spaniards would be in favor of an armed response from the government in the event of a possible attack by Morocco on the cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

According to a survey conducted by SocioMétrica, the overwhelming majority of Spaniards would support this option, while only 12.3% would prefer to "accept the fait accompli" and 7.3% of respondents have no opinion on the subject. By age group, 75.6% of respondents aged 31 to 45 would support an armed retaliation against Morocco.

In terms of political sensitivity, supporters of center and right-wing parties are the most enthusiastic about the idea. 87.8% of PP voters, 87.7% of Vox voters and 86.5% of Ciudadanos voters are betting on an armed retaliation against Rabat. PSOE and Más País supporters are less enthusiastic, with 73.4% and 78.4% respectively in favor. Podemos supporters (62.7%), on the other hand, prefer a stronger defense of the Spanish borders.

In terms of region, Catalonia (65.9%) is less interested in an armed retaliation against Morocco. It is closely followed by the Balearic Islands (66.2%). On the other hand, the option is strongly accepted by Asturias (89.4%) and Castilla-La Mancha (88.8%), the Basque Country (73.5%) and Cantabria (69.9%).

Since the city of Ceuta was invaded by thousands of migrants, the Spanish government has taken measures to strengthen security and border control. President Sanchez had immediately traveled to the autonomous city and declared that he would defend the territory "with all necessary means". The European Union had also warned Morocco that economic sanctions could be taken, threatening the cancellation of aid for the next six years.
