Polisario Front: Spain’s Support for Morocco’s Sahara Plan Hinders Conflict Resolution

The Polisario Front believes that Spain’s decision to support Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara "complicates everything," in the sense that it does not contribute to a solution to the conflict.
"Spain is excluding itself from any possible mediation and even from trying to facilitate Staffan de Mistura’s work by siding with Morocco. This decision complicates everything," the Polisario Front told Público.
These statements are in line with those made on Saturday during the visit of the UN Special Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to one of the Tindouf camps. The Sahrawi separatist movement specified on that occasion that "Spain has gone from being an actor that can contribute positively to an actor that has created more problems for the decolonization process of Western Sahara."
On Sunday afternoon, the Special Envoy for the Sahara was received by the Polisario Front leader, Brahim Ghali. The two officials reiterated that "the peaceful path is the way to go" to resolve the conflict.
Staffan de Mistura will be in Algeria this Monday, September 5, and in Mauritania on September 10, where he will also meet with the authorities of the two countries. He traveled to Algeria aboard an Air Algérie plane, and not with the Spanish military plane usually used for his trips.
