Podemos Reaffirms Support for Western Sahara Independence at Party Assembly

Tuesday 15 June 2021, by Prince

Podemos has been publicly thanked by the Polisario Front and Sahrawi media for its support for the Sahrawi cause in the Ghali case. This was on the occasion of the party’s assembly held in Alcorcón (Madrid).

"In the framework of the work of the 4th Extraordinary General Assembly of Podemos to turn the page after the sudden resignation of its leader, Pablo Iglesias, the representative of the Polisario Front in Spain, Abdulah Arabi, thanked the constant support of the purple party for international legality in Western Sahara and the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence," reports a Sahrawi media.

The head of the Polisario Front in Spain took the opportunity to stress that "until the Sahrawi people exercise their right to self-determination, Spain will continue to be the administrative power of the territory," recalling Spain’s "legal and political responsibility" in the decolonization process of Western Sahara. The Assembly was marked by the election of Ione Belarra as the new head of Podemos, replacing Pablo Iglesias.

Morocco considers the Sahara issue a "national cause". Since the beginning of the diplomatic crisis with Spain, the Moroccan authorities were ready to swear that Podemos was not foreign to the reception of Brahim Ghali at the Logroño hospital. But the government has not officially spoken on this issue, nor on the support of this party, of which Pedro Sanchez, the head of the Spanish government, is a member.
