EU Pledges €1.6 Billion to Support Morocco’s Green and Digital Transitions

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on Wednesday that the European Union will invest €1.6 billion to support Morocco’s efforts in its energy and digital transformation.
"This is a great opportunity for the green transition and the digital transition," the European official wrote on her Twitter account after talks in Rabat with Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch.
This aid is part of a European Union plan called "Global Gateway" announced last September, to mobilize €300 billion over the period 2021-2027, in favor of sustainable projects that strengthen the links between the European Union and its partners.
In its energy transition policy, Morocco aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45.5% by 2030 and has set a target of achieving a share of renewable energy of more than 52% of electricity generation capacity by 2025.
