EU Pledges 150 Million Euros to Support Morocco's COVID-19 Response Fund

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, said that Morocco "is pleased with the trust" of the European Union, which has provided immediate support of 150 million euros to the special fund for the management of the covid-19 pandemic, created on the initiative of King Mohammed VI.

The announcement of this support was made through a joint press release published on Friday, March 27, after a telephone conversation between the head of Moroccan diplomacy and the Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, Oliver Varhelyi.

"The Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy announced that the European Union will support the Moroccan budget by immediately reallocating 150 million euros, specifically dedicated to the needs of the special fund for the management of the covid-19 pandemic created on the initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI," the joint press release states.

Similarly, the Commission "will use all possible flexibility to redirect 300 million euros from the funds allocated to Morocco, towards the response to the pandemic by accelerating their mobilization to meet the country’s exceptional budgetary needs," the same source specifies.

The European Union is willing to support Morocco in its health, economic and social efforts, through several actions, the press release continues. In addition, "the Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy welcomed the strong and necessary measures promptly adopted by the Kingdom of Morocco to address the spread of the virus and its effects," the press release concludes.
