PJD Secretary General Resigns Amid Rumors of Advising Rival Party Leader

The Secretary General of the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), Jamaa Mouatassim, resigned on Friday from the party’s office, after rumors claiming that he would be the political advisor to Aziz Akhannouch, the head of government.
"I have decided to take responsibility and spare the party the embarrassment of a situation that I will try to correct," Mouatassim wrote in his resignation letter, citing "contrasting interpretations and assessments" within the party following the rumors designating him as the political advisor to the head of government, Aziz Akhannouch, a member of the Rally of Independents (RNI).
The former chief of staff of the PJD governments (2012-2021) and first deputy secretary general of the Islamist (opposition) party submitted his resignation on Friday evening. However, it is unclear whether the party president, Abdelilah Benkirane, will accept or not this resignation, which will jeopardize a political formation already greatly weakened by the scores in the last elections.
