PJD Crisis Deepens: Key Leader Resigns from Morocco’s Ruling Party

Less than 24 hours after the resignation of Mustapha Ramid from the government, the mayor of Fez has announced his resignation from the presidency of the National Council of the PJD. Former Deputy Minister of the Budget, Driss El Azami Idrissi is leaving the PJD ship due to the political crisis facing the party, which he says he can no longer tolerate.
At the PJD, resignations are piling up against the backdrop of a crisis. Driss El Azami Idrissi, former minister in Benkirane’s government, has submitted his resignation in a lengthy correspondence addressed to the party leader, Saâd Eddine El Othmani.
In this letter, the former minister recalled that "the confusion and the questions that arise each time and remain unanswered between the party’s positions and their consistency with the stated principles and the electoral program." He confides that he can no longer "tolerate and understand, nor explain or accept what is happening within the party," because he can do nothing and does not want to be a witness, as El Azami specified.
For the former minister, his colleagues have transformed the party’s National Council into a platform that serves only to calm tempers and absorb the anger of some and others instead of assuming its role as the highest decision-making body of the PJD.
As for the Minister of State in charge of Human Rights and Relations with Parliament, Mustapha Ramid, he presented his resignation from his ministerial post to the Head of Government on Friday, February 26, for health reasons. Some sources mention a disagreement with El Othmani regarding Parliament and that the minister could reverse his decision in the coming days.
