ONEE Rolls Out Smart Meters to Combat Electricity Theft and Improve Service

The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) wants to put an end to the problems of losses and fraud. In this sense, it is deploying its integrated system based on smart electricity meters.

The deployment of smart metering systems is a structuring project. With smart meters, ONEE will be able to limit losses and fraud, introduce flexible and more appropriate pricing, and offer services that improve the customer experience. "In addition to the smart meters, this integrated system consists of communication modems, a centralized data collection system, and a real-time information processing and analysis system," explains ONEE to Médias24. The system is integrated into the office’s SAP management software. Its operation is only possible with the 3G network.

The deployment of smart metering systems will take place in two phases. The first phase of the project concerns very high, high and medium voltage customers. With a total cost of 100 million DH, it will be financed by a World Bank loan. The generalization of the first phase is scheduled for early 2024. VHT, HT and MT (very high, high and medium voltage) customers are ONEE’s major consumers. They represent nearly 75% of the office’s turnover. The following phases concern low voltage customers. They represent "more than 99.5% of the customer portfolio and concentrate the largest share of commercial losses and operating costs of ONEE - electricity branch," it is specified.

The project will not only allow the office to limit losses and fraud, but also contribute, it is assured, to energy efficiency.
